At ADIPSA we currently have four upcoming projects.
- Food security
- Raw cane sugar production and commercialisation
- Health
- Ecotourism
Food securityWe are currently planning two comprehensive food security projects in coordination with two donor organisations. These projects will benefit 620 families in 18 communities in San Agustín. They will run for 4 years and include crop diversification and vegetable patches, with the aim of promoting food security amongst participating families. |
Raw cane sugar production and commercialisationThis project aims to improve traditional 'criolla' seeds, to adopt organic production techniques, and produce raw sugar cane, benefiting at least 30 families from San Agustín's communities. In the long term, we aim to sell organic raw cane sugar on the Fair Trade market in order to guarantee a fair price for our sugar cane producers |
Health
Taking into account the poor health conditions in San Agustín's communities, we plan to have a greater impact on the health of the local population. We are currently exploring the possibility of running a health project in the villages, run by health workers and midwives. We aim to coordinate with Community Development Boards (COCODES), the Municipal Development Board (COMUDE) and local health centres in San Agustín.
EcotourismAt ADIPSA, we are currently preparing an ecotourism project which we plan to run in cooperation with the local council and COCODES. Tourism is a rapidly growing sector in Guatemala and a good source of income for the population if the industry is developed prudently. Yet although the Sierra de las Minas National Reserve a sits as the backdrop to San Agustin and is one of the richest biodiversity zones in the country, tourism is as yet an almost untapped potential in the communities of San Agustín. We feel that ecotourism represents a good way of reducing dependency on commodity production in the communities of San Agustín and opening up alternative sources of income. We are also contemplating an arts and crafts project for women, which envisages creating new income by selling arts and crafts to visitors as part of the ecotourism project. We feel we can offer visitors to San Agustín an unforgettable experience. We aim to offer the following activities: In the Sierra de las Minas:
